Jubilee Weekend

This weekend has been very busy with lots of Jubilee celebrations. Last night there was a programme on TV called "All The Queen's Horses" which I recommend seeing if you get the chance. It was a two hour show with with sections on different areas around the world. There were lots of different horses and styles of riding to fit in with this theme. 

Below is one of the rosettes from the farm's Jubilee party. They had a competition in the morning for the children then a party on the yard in the afternoon. 


We also have had the Olympic Torch coming through our town this week. Below is a photo of when I went to see it in Macclesfield. Unfortunately it rained while it was here!



I have ridden Trooper a few times since coming back from University. When I road him on the roads I was very impressed with his behaviour as we went past lots of building sites without him spooking. When schooling him I have been riding him in the outdoor arena and have cantered him. He was better on the right rein in canter which is surprising as his left hind leg is the one with his bad tendon. On the right rein he was much faster and I was finding it difficult to balance him. Because it has been so rainy I have not been able to get any nice photographs! More will be coming soon, his coat is looking nice now he has lost his winter coat and his mane has grown a lot which looks cute.

Next week I am going to start organising collecting samples for my dissertation. I need to collect horse poo from 10 horses! Faecal egg counts will then need to be carried out, the ones that need to be wormed will be then more samples will be collected. I am currently trying to organise getting 10 Thermos flasks to keep the samples in after I have collected them, they need to be bought from a specific shop due to my funding!

I am a bit unsure where I will over the next few weeks but I think I will be at home a few days next weekend so I will get some photos of Trooper then. I also want to do some plaiting posts! Trooper's mane is getting quite long but I might borrow another horse and do a nice Arab Plait on him!

GB Rider Profile; Scott Brash

This week I am going to talk about Scott Brash who is a Scottish Show Jumper. Scott is one of our youngest top riders, being born in 1985.


Scott first started riding at the age of 7, his Dad used to be a jockey and bought him a pony one day. His list of achievements on the equestrian Team GB website is very long. To name a few, he has won and come highly placed in a number of 3 star and 4 star classes in 2011. At the start of 2012 he won the $50,000 Wellington Grand Prix riding Intertoy Z, a horse he has ridden for a number of years. He is currently ranked 4th out of Great Britain's Show Jumpers. 


Scott has a number of horses he rides including Intertoy Z (previously mentioned), Bon Ami II, and Sebastian III. Below is a video of an interview with him before a show jumping competition. He also speaks about the Olympics during the interview.


I am sure we will see a lot more of Scott Brash. He even said he has younger brothers and sisters that enjoy Show Jumping so they may be ones to look out for in the future.

Development Of Behaviour In Young Horses

Following my post on the evolution of equine behaviour I am now writing one on the development of behaviour in young horses. I am writing these now as part of my revision but I am going to schedule them to go out every Friday so my blog isn't bombarded with lots of behaviour posts at once! I think there will be about 6 of these posts and this is the 2nd. 

From birth

From birth to adulthood the foal will go through a number of phases in which specific behaviour patterns develop. Behaviour development is due to the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Some behaviours are innate and built in to the foal, these include standing, nursing, running and neighing. Learned behaviours take longer to develop.

Foals are able to stand and move within a very short period of time. This is due to them needing to suckle and avoid predators. They also have accurate mapping systems from an early age, this allows them to accurately be able to suckle, it is the equivalent to hand-eye coordination in humans. 


Mal-imprinting is a problem seen in foals that have been hand reared. This is when they prefer human company to that of other horses. The first indication of this may be when the foal shows snapping responses to humans. Caution should be taken. 


Play

Play is important for cognitive and physical development. An early view of play was that it provided physical exercise and helped to develop and maintain physical skills. It may improve the physical fitness of the foal. It is especially musculoskeletal development and establishing social skills. Although social interactions with other foals may be observed as early as the first week in foals that have young heardmates, there tends to be an increase in social behaviour during the second and third month of life when the foal enters the socialisation phase.

Play is often thought as of being difficult to define when assessing it in studies. The diversity and complexity of play can make it difficult to produce meaningful definitions of play that acknowledges its origin. Play is widely thought of as a juvenile behaviour but it is seen in adults of all ages. Play is frequently described as the performance of serious adult behaviours in a non serious context.


As a social prey species that places great survival value on cooperative behaviour and one that is highly motivated to play, the horse appears a relatively willing participant in most horse-human activities. However, it is not advisable to play horse games with the horse as it would be dangerous. This is a problem often seen in foals that have been hand reared.


Training from a young age

Optimal behaviour development means encouraging the development of the correct skills at the appropriate time. In the wild this often happens due to an interaction with certain stimuli. In the domestic situation, horses may be deprived of this opportunity to interact and learn from others. 

Specific periods exist when the learning of certain skills is achieved. These are called critical or sensitive periods. An example of this is the post natal period when the foal forms a bond with the mare.



In terms of handling and training the young horse, it is important to realise that there can be different reasons why training may be more effective during particular periods. One reason is related to the development of neurones in the brain and the central nervous system. This has been described in cats and chickens but not yet in horses. A second reason is related to the fact that in terms of habituation to potentially threatening stimuli, desensitisation occurs faster in naive animals than in animals that have already developed fear of the stimuli. The handling is also less risky as they are small and there is therefore more of a chance it will be carried out in a calm and controlled way. It may be that the specific time the training is being carried out is not as important as the training being repeated with certain time intervals over an extended of time. More research is needed in order to gain to full understanding in this area. 

Weaning

Most of this information on weaning is with regards to developing negative behaviours because when I was researching this topic for an assignment this was what the subject area was about!

Management during weaning is thought to be a key factor in the development of abnormal behaviours in the horse. There are many different theories as to which weaning approach is the best; this has lead to a large number of studies being carried out assessing which may be the best with regards to the horse’s welfare (Davies Morel, 2008). In feral horses weaning takes place around 8-9 months. However, in domestic horses, they are typically weaned between 4 and 6 months. This time difference can lead to problems such as increased amount of stress during weaning (Waran et al, 2007).


Parker et al, (2008) found that foals that were weaned when the mare initiated it had a significantly lower chance of developing abnormal behaviours. Despite this, they did not find that the age foals were weaned had a significant effect on the development of abnormal behaviours. Waters et al (2002) found the weaning technique to be more important than the age the foal was weaned at. 


As the horse evolved as a herd animal living on pasture, it may be detrimental to the foal if it is kept in a stable during weaning, it may cause sensory deprivation. Foals kept in the stable during weaning may not develop in the same way as their natural housed counterparts. Nicol et al (2005) found foals that were barn weaned were more stressed than those weaned in the paddock. 


When looking at the weaning method McCall et al (1985) found that foals show more vocalisation when they are suddenly separated from the dam compared to if this separation has happened gradually. It was also found that gradual methods result in less activity post weaning suggesting that the foal is less agitated compared to those foals that had been weaned abruptly.


There are a lot of factors affecting the development behaviours in young horses. Keeping as close as possible to the natural situation seems to be the best way to ensure correct development.

Instagram Photos And Update!

Just a little update. I have finished my exams now, they went better than I was expecting. Therefore I have finished the taught part of my Animal Science masters degree and I am now back at home. I now have to carry out a dissertation project in order to complete my masters but first I am having a week off! For my project I am going to be looking at the effect wormers have on the microbes in the horse's digestive tract that help to break down the food. I am carrying this out in conjunction with a company but I will have to speak to them and ask them if I can write about them on here! The final draft of my dissertation has to be handed in at the end of November. Next week I will be going to the company to start making arrangements and collecting samples (horse poo!). I will be spending the summer coming backwards and forwards between home, uni and the company, I am hoping to spend most of my time at home though.

I am going to try and speak to the donkey sanctuary I worked at last summer for 2 weeks to see if I can volunteer there once a week. I don't know if I will be able to because it will only be for a few months and I will be away some weeks. They know me now from last year though and I don't mind mucking out! It would be nice if I can do some blogs on there too!

Evolution Of Equine Behaviour

A while ago I wrote a post on the evolution of the horse. I am currently revising for my last exam which is on Monday morning and is on equine behaviour and welfare. Part of this module covers the evolution of equine behaviour so I decided to write a post on it.

Looking at the evolution of behaviour is interesting as the behaviours and level of intelligence that a horse shows must have evolved for specific reasons. They must have lead to an improved survival rate in the horse. Behaviour allows adaptation to the environment for protection, reproduction and body maintenance. An example of body maintenance behaviour is seeking shade when the weather is too hot or finding food and water.

Flight
When looking at fight or flight in the horse, flight is their primary mechanism of defence. In horses, their flight mechanism is very sensitive. They are built to be able to stand for long periods of time which is an advantage when being prepared to escape from predators. Horses will lay down but often only for a short period of time and when other standing horses are present.

Social behaviour
Horses have evolved to be social animals. This has given them an advantage in a a number of areas including protection, maintenance and reproduction. There are often variations in herd structures depending on environmental pressures such as how much food and water is present. The natural herd structure is rarely replicated in the domestic situation. The dominance hierarchy may still be seen however. In the domestic situation the herd is often more unstable than in the wild. This is due to new horses coming on to a yard and other horses being sold and moving onto another yard. This results in the continual re-establishment of the hierarchy. Social isolation may also be seen in domestic situations, particularly in stallions who are often isolated which can lead to behavioural problems.

Horses' social cognitive abilities have allowed them to succeed in a wide range of environments including those closely linked with humans.

Hamilton (1971) developed the selfish herd theory when looking at horses. It was thought that a horse may have had a mutation which increases it's reproductive strategy by taking cover between it's herd companions. This would make it less likely to be caught be predators. The novel behaviour would spread through the whole population as horses with this behaviour would be more successful at surviving and therefore reproducing.

The horse does have a strong tendency to gather in groups supporting Hamilton's selfish herd theory. However, other factors should be taken into account. The horses' ability to detect it's neighbours is an important factor in the dynamics of group formation. Not only the nearest neighbours but also the behaviour of distant neighbours gives useful information in case of predation (Viscido et al, 2002).

It has been found that when introducing a group of horses to a bucket of feed a hierarchy will be established. After a period of time dominant individuals showed tolerant type behaviour to other horses that were ranked below them in the hierarchy. Tolerated horses were found to have an increased food intake compared to non-tolerant individuals at an equal position in the hierarchy (Kolter, 1984).

Communication
Studies observing Prezwalski horses has show that a band’s behaviour can be synchronised between 50-98% of the time. Communication between the group helps this. Horses usually communicate without using their voices as they are prey animals.

When looking at a band of horses the position they are standing within the group may affect their ear movements. Horses at the front of a moving group tend to have their ears forward while the rest orientate their ears backwards. This suggests that their ears are being used for surveillance.

When horses are frightened by or simply suspicious of a stimulus, their alarm is often indicated by switching the direction of the ears and by a tense mouth and dilated nostrils. Alarmed horses tend to withdraw from stimuli with jerky movements that contribute as a survival strategy because they confuse the predator leading them unable to predict the horse's route of escape.

Primary forms of equine communication are vocalisation such as whiney, neigh or squeal. Body postures are also important such as being agonistic or submissive. Ear positions are another indicator as they have limited number of facial muscles but increased number of ocular muscles. Ear position and movement often used to communicate, aggression, alertness and vigilance.

Before placing new horses in a group, it is preferable to introduce horses to one another individually so that they have the opportunity to form pair bonds. The first meeting of two strangers can be facilitated if both are sufficiently hungry to be distracted by food sources placed a safe distance apart

Where possible the horse should be kept in social groups as they respond poorly to being isolated. Horses without companions have been found to spend 10% less time eating and are three times more active than horses that could make auditory, visual and tactile contact with other horses. There is evidence that mirrors may help.
